Conversation Street Episode 342

On this festive episode of the podcast, we share our thoughts on the triple whammy that was Coronation Street on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Okay, maybe that was a bit of an overstatement to call it festive, because although the episodes seemed to go down well with a majority of the fanbase, we did have a fair bit to moan about. Not about the Johnny and Jenny plot, we hasten to add - that was top drama right there. It's just.. we're both such big fans of Gina that we can't say we're happy with what's been going on in that storyline in recent weeks, and seeing Tim throw her out on Christmas Day really was the last straw! Ho hum.. at least seeing Evelyn getting Cerberus back was a heartwarming moment amidst the Yuletide misery! After Street Talk, we get right back into the Christmas spirit by playing a Corrie version of the party game Accentuate, which involves us taking it in turns to read out a famous Corrie quote in the voice of a different character, with the other person having to guess who the impersonation is of. Yes, perhaps we overestimated our abilities to do recognisable Corrie voices before we started playing, but it certainly provided a lot of laughs! In The Kabin, we share our thoughts on Corrie's performance against Emmerdale in this year's Big Quiz (they wuz robbed!) before finishing off the podcast with some festive feedback.

In our latest podcast, we talk about the episodes of Coronation Street broadcast between the 14th and the 21st December. Christmas is just around the corner - the time to eat, drink and be merry, or, as seemed to be the case in Weatherfield this week, the time to drink, drink and drink. Yes, there were quite a few Corrie characters getting in trouble thanks to the old booze this week: an increasingly paranoid Jenny uses it to numb the pain of her cheating husband possibly straying again; a kaylied Tim pulls Gina into bed with him and Brian discovers that a bellyful of shots and being swung on a harness on stage at school don't mix. Also this week, Audrey receives some sad news about Archie Shuttleworth, and Evelyn gets her hands on Roy's woody. After Street Talk, we recount our recent trip to Manchester, where we had the pleasure of watching Connor McIntyre and Les Dennis camping it up on stage as the ugly sisters in the Opera House's rendition of Cinderella - a brilliant show, and well worth the long car journey up north to see it! As it was a bit of a slow news week (and we were already running over time anyway), we skip The Kabin this week, and finish off the show with some listener emails.

This week, in a completely shocking and unexpected turn of events, Steff discovers that opting out of chemotherapy maybe isn't the best idea when your body's riddled with cancer. She and Sinead aren't the only ones in dire need of treatment either, as Brian's workload preparing for the nativity starts to take its toll on him. Meanwhile, Eileen's Phelan flush, and Chesney gets mugged by a knock-off Bistro ninja. Christmas is nearly here, and with it comes all the classics - a yuletide podcast logo, jingle bells on the theme music and, of course, a very erratic recording schedule. Our early podcast this week covers Corrie from Monday 5th and Wednesday 6th December - some pretty enjoyable episodes, to be honest! Top billing this week goes to those saucy Battersby sisters and their secret lovers, Imran and Nick. As much as they may have been acting a bit like teenagers on Wednesday night, their antics sneaking about certainly raised some laughs in this household, as did Tracy and Steve's discovery that Amy might fancy Aadi. Also this week, Fiz is finally able to stop holding various items in front of her stomach and disappear off in the back of a taxi with Hope for who knows how long, whilst in the factory, Carla plots to take back control from Nick. In The Kabin segment, we pay our respects to Peter Armitage, who sadly passed away this week, then we finish off the episode with some more of your listener feedback.

The case may have had more holes than a pair of Tim's old socks, but the jury on Sally's trial finally reach their verdict this week, and things aren't looking good for the former mayor of Weatherfield. Meanwhile, back at home, Gina's got her sights firmly set on Tim - but are her actions this week truly malicious? Elsewhere on the Street, Rana stands up to Kate (finally!), Jenny tracks a trollop, and compulsive fibber Jude seems to be lying low. On our latest podcast, we dissect the episodes of Coronation Street shown in the UK between the 12th and the 16th November. If you hadn't realised before that Sally Carman is a major asset to Corrie as Abi, surely this week has been enough to convince you, as the desperate mother fell off the wagon after deciding the twins were better off without her. Ending her week behind bars, though, we can only hope she'll get to share some scenes with the former mayor of Weatherfield in the coming months! Also this week, Audrey and Claudia lock horns at the Stylist Awards, Simon turns seaman and - call the Nobel Prize people! - Sinead finds the cure for cancer. After Street Talk, we're joined by Sandra Huggett for an interview about her time on Corrie playing DS MacKinnon. We find out what it was like for her to join Corrie as a guest cast member, and learn all about the back story she's created for MacKinnon, which we think goes a long way to making her become one of the show's most memorable recurring coppers. This week we had Bonfire Night, but sadly for Gina, the only fireworks between her and Tim were in her own mind. After Street Talk, we have a character profile on Gina Seddon - a real favourite of ours in the current character list - where we look back at her roots in 80s Corrie, how Connie Hyde has added a new dimension to her modern incarnation, and how her battles with bipolar disorder are portrayed. This week on the podcast, we cover the episodes of Corrie broadcast in the UK between the 29th October and the 2nd November, which can mean only one thing: Halloween special! Though Corrie didn't particularly do much for our Gemma's favourite holiday this year beyond a bit of a dress up in the Rovers, the spectre of death still loomed over a number of characters this week, none more so than Sinead, whose predicament was so dire that she even got her own special episode on Monday. We talk about our reactions to this (kind of) four hander, discussing what worked and what didn't for us, as well as mulling over whether we'd like to see this kind of thing more often on Corrie. Also this week, not only is Ali 'Doctor Death' Neeson still being haunted by his actions after the car crash a few weeks ago, he also has a wailing banshee to contend with in the form of his mum Michelle. Meanwhile, Steve returns from the desert looking like something out of a horror movie, and Nick gets his claws into factory. Speaking of Underworld, we hope you've got a spare pair of pants ready for the next section of the podcast, as it's time for some Corrie ghost stories! With some spooky music in the background, we recount four chilling tales of the paranormal from Coronation Street's past. We had loads of fun putting together this bit as it's something quite different for the podcast, so we hope you enjoy it!
